The primary aims of this work are to formulate the basic rules of Tagalog kernel sentences, and to show some of the most common transformations in the language.Further, this thesis seeks to establish a basis for a more detailed study of the transformational syntax of Tagalog, and expects to provide a point of departure for future contrastive analyses of Tagalog and other languages.The steps involved i n the analysis are as follows: investi-gation of actual and possible sentences known and p e r m i t t e d by the i n t u i t i o n of the a u t h o r , i n c l u d i n g a l a r g e w r i t t e n c o r p u s ; f o r m u l a t i o n of the r u l e s o f v a r i o u s k e r n e l s e n t e n c e s , g e n e r a t i o n of g r a m m a t i c a l s t r i n g s v/ith morphographemic r e a l i z a t i o n s , accompanied by the n e c e s s a r y e x p l a n a t i o n s i n c l u d i n g t r e e s t r u c -t u r e s ; c o l l a t i n g the d i f f e r e n t k e r n e l r u l e s and f o r m i n g t h e base r u l e s of ^ a g a l o g k e r n e l s e n t e n c e s ; showing some of the most common t r a n s f o r m a t i o n s , w i t h p e r t i n e n t comments; and c o n c l u d i n g w i t h a summary of what was d i s c o v e r e d i n the i n v e s t i g a t i o n , a l o n g w i t h recommen-d a t i o n s f o r f u r t h e r s t u d y and i n v e s t i g a t i o n .
