As my friends were away to hill stations, I was feeling very lonely.I watched the cars and other vehicles passing by and wished that like my friends, I would also have been travelling or passing my time. For the fun of it, I scratched the covered patch and found a number. My friends who ran along with me told them the reason.
My uncle had arranged everything for me the tickets and the visa. My heart skipped several beats as I ran to give this great news to my mother.
She was taken aback initially and her first reaction was not so positive.
I vow to be sincere to my friends, relatives and my country.
Life is full of surprises and shocks, good tidings and bad news, unexpected turns and sudden twists. That day I had gone to the near-by town of Tinsukia, Assam, to see a friend of mine who was in a private hospital in the town.
My father took me shopping the same day because he felt that I would need some more things to take along.
We bought gifts for my cousins and my uncle and aunt and when I came back home my cupboard was full of new clothes, shoes and gifts. At times in life, fortune so favours certain individuals that they are elevated to the pinnacle of glory and joy. Recently, good luck struck me and brought me the happiest day of my life. On the way to the hospital casually I purchased from a wayside bookstall the magazine, ‘India Today’. The whole of that night my friends sang and danced and my family prepared a grand dinner for them.I am an avid reader and used to spend a lot of my free time reading. Even when my friends left me late in the night I could hardly sleep.Since I had not expected any such thing to happen to me, and I had been feeling sorry for myself, this offer came as a great surprise. In class, we ask students to write a short essay on the happiest day of their life. But the real reason we ask them to do this is to ferret character traits from the exercise. However, she thought over it, consulted my father who was in his office and they both agreed to allow me to go to the United States to spend the rest of my holidays with my uncle.I jumped from room to room and started packing my clothes, my books and other articles that I would need there.I ripped the parcel open and found a beautiful tape recorder in it. However, even more, exciting than receiving the tape recorder was the letter which my uncle had written. The letter was an invitation to go to the USA to spend holidays. My half-yearly examination had just got over and so I had plenty of free time to spare. I was soon going to be the proud owner of a new car. On the stipulated date, I reached New Delhi and received the prize personally. When I reached home in the evening after the visit to my friend, I went through the magazine, which I had bought. The organisers made arrangements for the safe delivery of the car at my native village. Hundreds came from far and near to see my new car which I had got for just rupees ten (the cost of the magazine).
